How the B.I.S.H. Foundation Came To Be

In July 2008, I received a phone call from my best friend, my mother, which forever changed my life. She had been diagnosed with a very advanced stage of ovarian cancer and was told she had no hope of recovery. My mother was a strong, resilient woman and was not ready to give up. She decided to visit the MD Anderson facility in Houston for a second opinion.

In early August, Dr. Ramirez and a team of specialists from MD Anderson met with my mother. By the next day, they had a course of action laid out and to our great surprise surgery was possible! The procedure was scheduled immediately. What eventually followed were two major surgeries, 45 days in ICU and numerous moments when we thought the fight was lost.

As an only child, seeing my mother battle for her life was one of the most difficult experiences I have ever had to face. I do not know if I could have endured it without prayer and the wonderful staff at MD Anderson. They are a prime example of what medical professionals should be. The staff was knowledgeable, courteous and genuinely cared for my mother. My experience at MD Anderson made a lasting impression on me, as it has on so many others.

In the summer of 2010, my husband and I attended a concert and what happened to me was something I had never before experienced. During the performance, one of the lead singers of the band mentioned she had lost her mother to ovarian cancer. She shared a bit of her experience and the support they received from MD Anderson.  Immediately, I was motivated and realized my calling was to help support organizations who work on finding a cure for this terrible disease. My mother had always told me that her struggle was for a reason, even though we may not understand it, that night the reason became clear. The next day I began the process of forming the B.I.S.H. (Believers Inspiring Survivors for Hope) Foundation.

Unfortunately, due to complications, my mother lost her fight in July 2012 but her spirit lives on in me and the lives she touched. I am forever grateful for the 4 years we had together after she was diagnosed and to the staff of MD Anderson.

I am very excited to see what the future holds for our organization and what we can do to further help cancer research and thereby making a difference for others. I would like to thank the Board of Directors of B.I.S.H Foundation and all of you for your support and for taking this journey with me.
